NXR-SW
What a great race the boy team had at NXR-SW. It was a really fun experience participate as a team in Arizona. We were expecting great weather but we got crazy weather. It rained almost the whole time we were there. This I feel played to our advantage as a team because I believe our team is one of the most mentally tough teams out there. The race course was muddy and there was a stream they had to run through 4 times which made the race really interesting. The team spread was the best we have had the whole year and Sam and Hyrum had huge performances. Our team finish 5th out of 31 invited teams. This competition is between the best teams of 5 states, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. This means we finished 5th out of over 1000 high schools between the 5 states. Utah was able to put 12 teams in the top 16. Winning the battle of the states and showing our dominates at Nike South West Region. Congrats to American Fork and Davis High School for going 1st and 2nd and receiving the automatic qualification to run at Nike nationals!!!

Pre-Footlocker Results
Thanks for those who did pre-footlocker. It shows a lot of dedication and that you guys want to be better. There were some great performances. The course was a little long. It was around 3.2 to 3.29 depending on GPS watch. To make a guess it is about 1:00 minute to 1:30 slower then the West Lake course that we ran twice this year.

Region Result
Great Job at region. There were a lot of great races and a lot of people came prepared ran there personal best. The team set some individual goals and almost everyone reached those goals that they were shooting for. I am proud of you guys this season and I am excited to see where you will be in the future.
It is hard to be part of such a great region. If you are not ready and prepared then it will chew you up and spit you out. It is hard not to go to state. It is hard to not reach all of our team goals. But this is a great learning experience. It is a horrible feeling that we never want again. We need to take what happened and change the things that didn't work. We need to be better at doing the little things. We need to make sure that we are mentally prepared and ready to go, not only in races, but in workouts as well. We need to make sure we are helping everyone on the team become better. We need to make sure we are not sorting ourselves from our potential. Great moments come from great opportunities and we start preparing for those great opportunities by the little things we do months and months before.
The great thing about being part of a great region is;
1) Being part of a hard region makes us better. We have to step up to the challenge that are in front of us. Which makes us better athletes and people. If we were part of those weaker regions then we would be content with being mediocre. Because our region is tough we become better and more refined. We realize that it will take a lot hard work and dedication to be successful. We welcome and except and are excited for this challenge as a member of Riverton High Cross Country.
2) Because it is hard when you do succeed it means more. Thomas Paine said, yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly."
Congrats to the boys team for making it to state and Mckayla for making it individually and running such a great race.

PARK CITY INVITE RESULTS
Hey Team,
Sorry this is so late. Because of technical difficulties with Park City's timing system, result weren't posted until Saturday night. We had an amazing showing from our team. On the JV side I was very impressed with the aggressiveness. Rylee and Katie starting out in front and finishing 6th and 11th respectively. On the boys side Derrick, Josh, Courtland, Craig and Drew all having really good races. There performance gave our JV a 3rd place finish out of 28 teams. Kamille, Brooklyn, Rebecca and Grace all ran great times as well. A good amount of you ran about the same time or faster times than what you ran at Nebo invite. Park city race was the same distance as the Nebo invite but Park City's course was considerably harder not to mention it being colder.
What a great showing on the varsity boys side. Congrats to the boys for winning their first cross country race in school history. All of the boys ran great. Brady, Clay, Michael, Landon and Hyrum stepped up and all ran PR's. Brady, Clay, Michael, and Hyrum ran about the exactly the same times as they did last week a Nebo.
The girls varsity team ran really well. Brooke, Katie, Britney and Zoe all had amazing races. They all ran about the same time at this race then they did at Nebo. They took 9th out of 25 teams. I feel this was one of our best races for the girls this year.
Michael is the boys runner of the week. Last year we had a great boys team. Michael ran faster on this course than any of our boys did last year. He was in great possession the whole race and if he would of had his normal finishing speed, we would of gone 3, 4 and 5 in the race. He was confident with his abilities, he looked ready and focused and ran an amazing race.
Britney is the runner of the week on the girls side. She ran 40 seconds faster at Park City then she did at Nebo. And for the first time this year she cracked into the top 5 of varsity. That race that she ran was about a 1 minute PR. Britney is looking so strong when she is running right now. Congrats and thanks for the hard work.

Nebo Invitational
Wow, what a great performances our team had today. I wish that I was a better writer so that I could articulate how proud I am of so many of you. Training to prepare to race good is hard. Improving, staying focused, pushing though pain in races is hard. Most people don't have that type of drive and character to be a runner. There are some many people I want to highlight for having good races but it would probably take me five hours to write it. So I am just going to tell you who gets the runners of the week and know that if you ran a good race I noticed. Remember every race is a learning experience. Know what you did good and how you can be better. If you do that you will become a great runner.
On the girls side the runner of the week going to RYLEE WOOD. Rylee took a risk and put her self in a position to run a great race and it paid off. She ran up in that top 15 and refused to leave and ran a massive PR. There is a lot we can learn from Rylee's Tenacity and Audacious approach to her race. 1. You don't know what you can do unless you try. 2. You learn more about yourself from taking risk then you do from playing it safe. 3. Good old fashion, "heart" (or Gritt or whatever you want to call it) is a paramount part to improvement. FYI: 23 days ago Rylee ran a 23:43 on a very similar course. Today she ran a 21:08. Congrats
On the boys side LANDON ANDREWS wins runner of the week. I couldn't of asked for a better performance from Landon. We talked about what he needed to do for our team to be where they needed to be. Landon was committed and his mental and physical preparation lead him to a great race. Landon has put in such relentless time this year for the success of our boys team. He has been consistent and willing to do whatever it takes to run well. Now his hard work is starting to bring forth fruit.

BYU INVITE
Nice job this week to all of you. I was very impressed with a lot of the performances in the races. The race was a little longer than what we have been running. It was a 3.25 mile course and a little muddy so times should be a little slower. I feel as a whole the team improved from last race and there were some people who improved a lot .
We are now hitting the middle of our season and we should start to see continually improvement. Make sure over the next few weeks that we are focused. This means that we need to be ready and give our best in practice, eat right, go to bed, do your doubles and make sure we do the little things.

American Fork Grass Relays
Riverton High School Cross Country had a great opportunity to be able to compete at the very competitive, 18th annual, grass relays race. Some of the top teams/runners in the state/nation were there to represent. There were some great performances by our teams.
Starting with freshman sophomore boys Tracen and Jonathan lead the way with some very impressive times of 11:26 and 11:48 respectively. Those times would have been them varsity anytime in Riverton history excluding this year and last. Taking a quick glance I think that the freshman/sophomores would of taken 3/30 teams.
In the girls freshman/sophomore race Zoe continued to impress with a great time of 13:45 Which gave her the 2nd fastest girls team time of the day. As a whole the freshman/sophomore girls seemed to run really well and show some great improvements.
The Jr/Sr boys race was exciting with all the boys in that race running very well making that 5-7th spot in varsity in reach for a lot guys. This race was lead the way by Landon who finished 9th overall and ran a great time of 11:03.
The Jr/Sr girls race was great with Brooke and Britney running much better races than last week. Brooke ran a time of 13:47 which was the 3rd fastest girls team time and Brittney running 14:30 which was the 7th fastest girls team time of the day. Great teams are characterized by many thing one of which is depth. Our girls team has a lot of people right now that are running great and could take a varsity spot.
The varsity races where done in relay form. They girls team took 13/30 and the boys team took 4/30. Mckayla took 9 place and earned a spot of the top 25 board all time. Brady took 5th and moved into 11th all time in course history. The relay races are tough because most of the time you are running without being by anyone. This particular year was extremely hot and I was dying of heat just running around. The Boys team was the only team to have 3 guys in the top 15.
Thanks Riverton for giving your best.

Highland Invitational
Hey Everyone,
Congratulations Riverton XC for racing so hard. Our team as a whole had a lot of great performances. I feel that our season got off to a pretty good start. I feel that put our self in a good to position reach our goals by the end of the year. There were a few fluke things that happened that made a few races not quite go the way we expected them to go but all in all it was great.
For those of you whose races didn't quite go the way you wanted it to go use that as an opportunity to become better. Evaluate your race: know what you did good, know what you can do better and know what you are going to do during practice to help better prepare you for the races.

Highland Meet
We have a meet this week. We will leave Thursday at 2:30 from the North East side of the school. This is by the RHS statue.
1. Please be prepared physically and mentally. Make sure you're eating and drinking right and going to bed at appropriate time. This is not just the day before but it is two day before. Don't over sleep the day of the race. Shoot for around 8-9 hours of sleep. Get up and run a easy 10-20 minute jog with some strider.
2. Make sure that you have a GAME PLAN and you know your race strategies. Make sure your game plan is made up of things that are controllable. Controllable race goals might consist of, but are not limited to the following: Saying positive things to myself during the race, Pushing the uphills, Using the down hill, finish the last mile faster than my first two, giving it my all, push through the pain, run together as a group, etc.
3. The tone of the season is set by the first race. Let's go show the rest of Utah how hard we have been working this summer.
4. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A UNIFORM come at 2:00 and pick it up from me. DON'T WAIT TIL 2:30 and expect to get one.
5. If you are not registered for the race please call or text and let me know. Thanks
6. Take risk - These early races are the times to take risks. Growth happens when we take risks, you don't find out anything about yourself if you always stay in your comfort zone. Try running with a person you haven't ran with. Try surging mid race. Try kicking from further out. Do this and you will see your running ability develop much faster. YOU CANT WIN UNLESS YOU TRY.
7. I listened to a podcast where they interviewed Anthony Whiteman. Anthony Whitman was the first and only person over 40 who has broken the 4:00 mile barrier. He said something that stuck out to me. His words shows me what kind of mindset you need to have to accomplish something that no one has not done before. He said, "Believe in the possibilities, Believe in yourself, expect miracles." DON'T let anyone make you believe that you can't achieve greatness, especially not yourself.

Up Coming Events
HEY TEAM,
We have some thing coming up that are very important.
1. Spike Night(Thursday August 8th at 7pm) - We have spike night this Thursday at Run Great at 7pm. Because we do it as a group run great will provide us with pizza and drinks as well as a 20% discount on our shoes and spikes. Please Attend. For you young kids that don't have racing shoes it is really important to have them so that you can have your best possible performance at races. Also one component of staying injury free is having a nice shoe.
2. ELIGIBILLITY - There are THREE task that need to be done to be eligible. 1) Complete your packet 2) get a physical 3) pay your participation fee. If these three things are not done you can not compete. Eligibility packets and physicals need to be done ASAP. I think the last time the school will have Physicals is Monday, August 12th @ 5pm. They provide the service for $25. You can also get it done at your own doctor if you prefer. Please get it done if you have not. If I don't have record of you paying the participation fee, completing your packet and getting your physical you can not compete. This not only effects you but it effects your team.
3. Running With The Pack(Saturday August 10) - This Saturday we are helping with a race. We want all of you to be there at 6:30 to help with registration and putting things together. We will do our long run after the race.

XC CAMP
This years XC camp was one of the best of all time for many reasons. We had the biggest turn out to camp we have ever had. This shows our teams commitment and dedication to success. We have had great summer training so far and it is really showing in so many ways.
In our 5* MILE team relay we had the best times ever posted with numerous PR's. This was lead by Clay, Michael, Brady all breaking the course record on the boys side and Mckayla smashing the course record by 45 seconds on the girls side. There were a few near course record breaks by Brandon and Sam only 2 and 7 seconds off respectively. Maddie pushed her self forward to become 3rd all time and Brooklyn Dutton, coming out of nowhere, now has the 4th fastest girls time. With Brooke, Katie and Zoe within seconds behind her. For results click HERE
I feel that as a team we become a lot closer. I was very inspired by Katie and Maddie talking about the importance of believing in yourselves and giving it all for the team even when people don't believe in you. I also appreciated Coach Worthlin giving us the vision of our potential as athletes and how we can become more than what we believe we can.
Thanks everyone who made this a great camp. Thanks for the great attitudes you all have. Thanks for making everyone feel like there are a part of the team. You all are great and us as coaches are proud to be associated with you.

TRUE GRIT
Athletes with grit are the most exiting watch. They make you want stand on your chairs and cheer. These are the people you never want miss watching. You feel that no matter the odds they will pull through. This is because they are not afraid to TAKE RISK and put themselves in a position to accomplish their goals. No matter the pain or anguish or how hard it is they show extreme determination and push through it.They do this knowing that no matter the outcome they succeed if they try. They know that life is all about becoming better and overcoming adversity. Life is more beautiful, more memorable and more enjoyable when you put your whole heart and effort into it. A person with true grit never has regrets or what ifs.

Riverton High runners are gritty, have no regrets, take risks and enjoy life.

Clay, Michael and Brandon all PRing in the 400 and going 1,2 and 4 and scoring 23 points in one event!!
Sam Coleman being in the slow heat of the 800 winning his heat big to earn us points.
Miller stepping up in the shot put and taking 2nd place.
Preston being Mr. consistent in the vault and taking 4th place
Brady being reliable as always, scoring in both the 1600 and 3200
the 4*400 team maintaining there unbeaten streak and capping of a great meet.
Girls
Mckayla running 2 amazing times and 2 PR's in her distance events. Running a 5:03 in the mile and a 11:01 in the 2 mile.
Bre finishing strong in her 400 to take 3rd overall.
Bryna being ranked 8th in the Javelin and throwing a big PR and winning state.
Charlie Farr finishing above here rank and getting 4th place in the shot.
Here is one of my favorite poems. It reminds me of the Riverton track team and the character of its athletes. Great people are those people who rise above when times get tough. They do not make excuses. They are happy for others success and they thrive to be their best they can be.
Quit!” “Give up, you’re beaten!” they shout at me and plead,
“There’s just too much against you now, this time you can’t succeed.”
And as I started to hang my head in front of failure’s face,
My downward fall is broken by the memory of a race.
And hope refills my weakened will as I recall that scene.
For just the thought of that short race rejuvenates my being.
A children’s race, young boys, young men; now I remember well.
Excitement, sure, but also fear; it wasn’t hard to tell.
They all lined up so full of hope. Each thought to win the race
Or tie for first, if not that, at least take second place.
And fathers watched from off the side, each cheering for his son,
And each boy hoped to show his dad that he would be the one.
The whistle blew and off they sped, as if they were on fire
To win, to be the hero there, was each boy’s desire.
And one boy in particular, his dad was in the crowd,
Was running near the lead and thought, “My dad will be so proud.”
But as he speeded down the field, across the shallow dip,
The little boy who thought to win lost his step and slipped.
Trying hard to catch himself, his arm flew out to brace,
And ‘mid the laughter of the crowd, he fell flat on his face.
So, down he fell, and with him, hope. He couldn’t win it now.
Embarrassed, sad, he only wished he’d disappear somehow.
But, as he fell, his dad stood up and showed his anxious face,
Which to the boy so clearly said, “Get up and win the race!”
He quickly rose, no damage done, behind a bit, that’s all.
And ran with all his mind and might to make up for the fall.
So anxious to restore himself, to catch up and to win,
His mind went faster than his legs. He slipped and fell again.
He wished he had quit before with only one disgrace.
“I’m hopeless as a runner now, I shouldn’t try to race.”
But, in the laughing crowd he searched and found his father’s face.
That steady look that said again, “Get up and win the race!”
So, he jumped up to try again, ten yards behind the last;
“If I’m to gain those yards,” he thought, “I’ve got to run real fast!”
Exceeding everything he had, he regained eight or ten,
But trying so hard to catch the lead, he slipped and fell again.
Defeat! He lay there silently, a tear dropped from his eye.
“There’s no sense running more. Three strikes, I’m out…why try?”
The will to rise had disappeared, all hope had fled away.
So far behind, so error-prone, a loser all the way.
“I’ve lost, so what’s the use?” he thought, “I’ll live with my disgrace.”
But, then he thought about his dad, who soon he’d have to face.
“Get up,” an echo sounded low, “Get up and take your place.
You weren’t meant for failure here; get up and win the race.”
With borrowed will, “Get up,” it said, “You haven’t lost at all,
For winning is no more than this–to rise each time you fall.”
So up he rose to win once more. And with a new commit,
He resolved that win or lose, at least he wouldn’t quit.
So far behind the others now, the most he’d ever been.
Still, he gave it all he had, and ran as though to win.
Three times he fallen, stumbling, three times he rose again.
Too far behind to hope to win, he still ran to the end.
They cheered the winning runner, as he crossed the line, first place,
Head high and proud and happy; no falling, no disgrace.
But, when the fallen crossed the finish line, last place,
The crowd gave him the greater cheer for finishing the race.
And even though he came in last, with head bowed low, unproud,
You would have thought he won the race, to listen to the crowd.
And to his dad, he sadly said, “I didn’t do so well.”
“To me you won,” his father said, “You rose each time you fell.”
And now when things seem dark and hard and difficult to face,
The memory of that little boy helps me in my race.
For all of life is like that race, with ups and downs and all.
And all you have to do to win is rise each time you fall.
“Quit!” “Give up, you’re beaten!” They still shout in my face,
But another voice within me says, “Get up and win the race!”

2013 Region 4 Championships
Wow! What a great week it was for Riverton High School Track and Field!!!
Thanks to all you that helped make this event run well. So many people gave up there time and help out with the meet to make sure it ran smoothly. Riverton High School and region 4 benefited greatly from your efforts.
Girls: The girls looked really good being on the top of almost every event. The girls team exceeded our expectations as coaches stepped up to the challenge. The girls took 2nd behind Bingham and are ranked 3rd in 5A behind only Davis and Bingham.
Boy: The boys continued there great season winning region in a convincing fashion by almost doubling the second place team. It seemed like every event we watched it was Riverton High School competing for that top spot.
Congrats! The hard work that you guys put in for the last 6 month has showed with your great performances.

JERSEYS
ALL RIVERTON TEAM MEMBERS READ THIS AND PASS IT ON.
THE JERSEY NEEDS TO BE ORDERED BY SUNDAY NIGHT 1/27 FOR US TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THEM HERE and PRINTED BY THE OLYMPIC OVAL MEET.
Coach Englestead
I final found a jersey that I liked and was at a favorable price! For indoor we want to look like a legit team and match. Indoor is a club sport. It is frowned upon to wear school issued gear. To have the team match we will need everyone to buy there own jersey. THERE IS A LINK ON THE BLOGS SIDE BAR TITLED "GEAR PACKETS." CLICK THE LINK AND YOU CAN ORDER ONLINE.

Please pass this on to your coaches and teammates.
Thanks

Quote of the Week
I just read this quote and loved it. I thought you all would like it as well. Remember you can do and be what ever you want to if you put in the effort. What you are genetically blessed with does nothing for you if you don't work. NO EXCUSES

MORNING PRACTICE ON "B" DAYS
Distance Team- We will be having optional morning practice on "B" days. It will be a 20 to 30 min easy run followed by lifting. We will meet at 6:15 AM. This will give you a better opportunity to get home earlier after school because you wont need to lift or do core with the team in the afternoon. Also it will be great for those trying to get there mileage up.
